I worked on these paintings from my home studio in the mountains of North Carolina near Asheville after several visits by a young black bear. I never intended to paint bears but this little guy stole my heart. At one point he climbed up onto our deck to investigate our bird feeder. He remained so calm and completely unaggressive even with my doodle, Ashlee, yelling at him to get lost. Eventually he left giving us a rather hurt look over his shoulder that I can still see in my mind’s eye.

These mixed media painting include collaged papers I made by Eco-dying leaves and other elements from my walks through the forest where my visiting bear lives. I also added hand stitching – an intriguing element I hope to incorporate into more of my work in the future.
