Books I've read and I recommend:

I’m delighted to share some of the books I’ve enjoyed with you. Reading is one of my greatest life-long pleasures. Each book listed here is one I’ve learned from, enjoyed with particular intensity, and represents significant work from the authors involved. I applaud each of these writers for mastering their skills and having the passion and discipline to sit down and write so we can enjoy their work.

While I enjoy book sharing I still prefer buying my own books and thereby supporting these authors. (FYI: In addition, if you buy from my links, it won’t cost you any more but I will earn a small commission.)

For the love of books

I remember when I went back to university to get my masters’ degree after a break of many years. I had been so busy with life and raising young children it had been years since I had read anything for pleasure let along study. If you understood how I fell in love with books and reading as a young child, you will understand how crazy this was!

I was studying psychology, my reading list was extensive, and I delighted in every single one. Those books were a lifeline. I did not realize how dormant I had become until parts of my soul were roused between those pages.

Now I make it a point of reading both for fun and for learning simply as a way of life. I never want to go back to sleep like that again.

Study - for life-long learning!

FIVE TUESDAYS IN WINTER by Lily King

This entire collection is gorgeously written and fully immersive. Do yourself a favor and get hold of a copy.

The COMFORT of CROWS by Margaret Renkl

Margaret’s writing about a year in her back yard is an addictive read about noticing and appreciating the little things as well as her rage against the destruction of natural habitats and our changing world. She writes beautifully.

THE YEAR OF LIVING DANISHLY by Helen Russell

One of the things I love about travel is the glimpse into how other people live their lives. In this book, Helen gives us a really interesting look into a completely different (for me) way of living that I found fascinating. She also writes well and has a good sense of humor which makes for a great read.

IRIS APFEL accidental icon- Musings of a Geriatric Starlet

As colorful and interesting as the star herself, I love this book and keep it out where I can continue to be inspired every day.

ATOMIC HABITS by James Clear

So much great information here about setting yourself up for success in creating new habits you want and getting rid of those you wish to stop. And what a following this guy has! Why am I only learning about him now?

YOUR BRAIN ON ART by Susan Magsamen and Ivy Ross

So much exciting insight into what we already know – ART in all its wonderful forms is so GOOD for us!

WINTERING by Katherine May

A thoughtfully written personal journey of the power of rest and retreat in difficult times. This was such an encouraging and beautiful book.

Austin Kleon’s small books are packed with excellent information and fun illustrations. Share Your Work is all about ways of getting your work in front of other people in a way that makes it doable for all of us.

STEAL LIKE AN ARTIST by Austin Kleon

This is the book that started it all for Austin Kleon. It was a life-changing read for me when I first encountered it years ago. It perfectly explains how artists legitimately inspire each other – not copy, INSPIRE.

KEEP GOING by Austin Kleon

Feeling overwhelmed by all the things? Austin Kleon’s book, Keep Going, may be just what you need to give you the motivation and encouragement to keep going. I love his books!

THE ARTIST'S WAY by Julia Cameron

What a great way to discover your path to creativity and a creative life. Julia is a writer who encourages not only writers but artists and creatives of all kinds to nurture and feed their creativity. Such an inspiring read!

PERFECT IMPERFECT: The Beauty Of Accident Age And Patina by Karen McCartney

This gorgeous book explores a life philosophy I embrace: that there is beauty in imperfections. So delightful. I love it!

THE LITTLE BOOK OF WINTER DELIGHTS by Colleen Kastner

Well of course I recommend this book. I wrote it! But seriously, if you need a little pick-me-up as winter drags on, this is the book for you. A delicious offering of delightful morning routines, winter walks, soul food, spa treats, poetry and good book ideas. Cozy up and enjoy.

Fiction - because I LOVE a good story!

HOLLY by Stephen King

Typically my taste runs more to psychological thriller than horror, but Stephen King is such an amazing storyteller I’m happy to make an exception for his work.

ELEANOR OLIPHANT IS COMPLETELY FINE by Gail Honeyman

Sweet and insightfully written story about not fitting in and mental health issues – with a happy ending.

FRESH WATER FOR FLOWERS by Valerie Perrin

A gorgeously written, exquisitely complex story of a woman’s endurance and survival against the odds.

Check back here regularly for more exellent books added to my list. And please share your favorites with me. I’m always looking for more great reads.
