Visual Poetry of Memory

I love to walk to clear my  head, to breathe fresh air, notice the beauty of nature around me, and hear the soothing rhythmic pattern of my footsteps slowly eating up the miles. It’s a peaceful pastime with the added benefit of being healthy.

The mountain trails of North Carolina outside Asheville are one of my favorite places and although walking is good for thinking, I try to keep my senses tuned to the textures and colors of the landscape, listen to the chitter of birds, and enjoy the feel of fresh air on my skin and in my lungs. There is so much beauty I want to drink it in without missing a drop.

Sometimes, however, I’m so busy thinking I stop paying attention. My feet keep moving but I’m not really seeing the beauty around me.

Suddenly I walked through an opening in the woods.  I looked up to see the path had fallen away in front of me to reveal a chasm of open green valley with blue mountains in the far distance. I was on top of the mountain with the whole world in front of me.

I’ve had that experience a few times and it never fails to take my breath away. That moment I look up and all my troubles melt away, eclipsed by beauty.
